The 2025 Academic Conference of Anesthesiology Branch of Chinese Geriatrics Society and the Academic Conference of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Branch of Shandong Research Hospital Society were grandly opened in Jinan, Shandong Province from August 15th to 17th, 2025. The conference was grand in scale and rich in content. It set up 1 main venue, 8 sub-venues and 41 academic sections, and gave 173 wonderful academic reports. A total of 293 experts attended the conference, including 191 expert speakers and 147 hosts and discussers! This conference successfully brought together the wisdom and strength of the national anesthesiology community, establishing a high-level academic exchange platform for the development of geriatric anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, and effectively promoting the progress of the discipline and the improvement of clinical practice levels.

Opening ceremony: Distinguished guests gathered to discuss development

Professor Fan Li, President of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics; Professor Wang Guolin, President of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics; Professor Wang Yuelan, Vice President of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics and Chairperson of the Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Branch of the Shandong Research Hospital Society; Professor Hu Sanyuan, President of the Shandong Research Hospital Society Professor Xiao Wei, a member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong First Medical University, Professor Yu Weifeng, the Chairperson of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and Professor Chen Linjun, the Deputy Secretary-General and Director of the Science and Technology Department of the Wu Jieping Medical Foundation, attended the meeting and delivered speeches successively, fully affirming the achievements of the branch's work and expressing high expectations. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Li Yize from General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University and Professor Sun Yongtao from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University.

Professor Fan Li's Keynote Speech: "The Development of Geriatric Medicine is Imperative

Professor Fan Li pointed out that China is rapidly entering an aging society. Elderly patients have many complications and high perioperative risks, and it is difficult for a single department to meet their demands. A patient-centered multidisciplinary collaboration system should be established, covering comprehensive preoperative assessment, precise intraoperative management and postoperative rehabilitation intervention. At the same time, she emphasized that the protection of brain function and cardiopulmonary function is the core goal. In the future, continuous exploration should be made in areas such as intelligent monitoring, rehabilitation and long-term care to truly achieve the transformation from "extending life expectancy" to "improving the quality of life".

Professor Tseng Yin-ming's Keynote Speech: "Discussion on the Field and Model of Anesthesia Medical Services in China"

Professor Zeng Yinming, from a macro perspective on the development of anesthesiology, pointed out that anesthesia is not only a guarantee for the smooth progress of surgeries but also an important pillar of the perioperative medical service system. He proposed to promote the transformation and upgrading of the anesthesia service model, extending the work to preoperative optimization and postoperative rehabilitation. At the same time, he shared practical experiences both at home and abroad, as well as the establishment of a more complete multi-disciplinary team and talent cultivation mechanism, thereby comprehensively enhancing the diagnosis and treatment safety and medical experience of elderly patients.

Professor Huang Yushun: An Introduction to Confucian Culture

Professor Huang Yushun expounded on the value of Confucianism in modern medicine from the perspective of the integration of culture and medicine. He pointed out that elderly patients not only need the support of medical technology, but also need humanistic care and psychological comfort. The concepts of "benevolence" and "harmony" in Confucian culture are highly consistent with the core spirit of medicine. Medical development should strike a balance between technological innovation and cultural nourishment to provide warmer and more caring care for elderly patients. The report, ranging from the development strategy of geriatric medicine, the innovation of clinical service models to the interpretation of cultural heritage, brought a profound collision of ideas and academia to the participants.

After the opening ceremony of the conference, there was a splendid academic report session. The eight sub-forums were rich in content, covering various aspects such as preoperative organ function assessment and optimization, neurosurgical anesthesia and brain protection, perioperative organ protection, application of artificial intelligence and big data, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine anesthesia, airway management and ultrasound technology, etc. They comprehensively demonstrated the latest academic knowledge and skills, and also highlighted the latest achievements in the basic and clinical research of geriatric anesthesia in China.

The conference specially set up a session on artificial intelligence and big data to explore innovative applications such as electroencephalogram monitoring, automated anesthesia technology, and AI-enabled elderly care. The Ultrasound and Airway Work Shop offers practical training on transthoracic cardiac ultrasound, visual airway management, etc. The discussion of difficult cases focuses on clinical challenges such as perioperative allergic reactions and reflux aspiration. The integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine anesthesia section explores distinctive therapies such as percutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and acupoint electrical stimulation for the prevention and treatment of postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Consensus finalized: Promote discipline standardization

The conference simultaneously promoted the construction of disciplinary consensus: a finalization meeting for the "Expert Consensus on Perioperative Brain Function Assessment and Monitoring in Elderly Patients in China" was held, and a seminar on "Perioperative Brain Protection and Airway Management in the Elderly" was organized to provide standardized basis for clinical practice.

Case Presentation: Focusing on clinical difficulties

The discussion session on difficult cases was closely related to reality and covered hot issues such as perioperative allergic reactions and reflux aspiration. The sharing of outstanding cases from across the country has provided reference and inspiration for front-line clinical practice.

WORKSHOP: Equal emphasis on practical operation and innovation

The Workshop section was equally wonderful: Ultrasound and airway management, transthoracic cardiac ultrasound, and specialized therapies for visualized airway management. The combination of theory and operation enabled the participants to gain a lot from practice.

Plenary Session: Review the past and plan for the future

The conference was held concurrently with the full committee meeting of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society. Vice President and Secretary-General Xu Xiaodong of the Chinese Geriatrics Society attended the meeting. President Wang Guolin comprehensively reviewed the achievements of the branch in the 2024-2025 period, and Vice President Wang Yuelan introduced the preparatory work for this meeting. Vice President and Secretary-General Xu Xiaodong of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics highly praised and encouraged the work of the branch, and put forward new expectations for future work. The plenary session was presided over by Standing Committee Member and General Secretary Xie Keliang.

President Wang Guolin concluded that the three-day 2025 Academic Conference of the Anesthesiology Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society came to a successful conclusion. Experts and scholars from all over the country gathered together to have in-depth exchanges on 41 academic sections. There were not only cutting-edge explorations but also sharing of practical experiences, as well as the consolidation of standard consensus and the display of young people's strength. This grand event not only promoted the academic progress of geriatric anesthesia and perioperative medicine, but also injected new ideas and methods into clinical practice. The successful holding of the conference could not have been possible without the passionate dedication of all the experts, the hard work of the volunteer team and the meticulous support of the conference organizing committee.
