The Fourth Academic Conference on Geriatric Nephrology of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, hosted by the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, was grandly opened in Beijing on July 26, 2025. President Fan Li of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, Vice President Peng Bin of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Professor CAI Guangyan, the chairperson of the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and many other leaders and experts attended the conference.
President Fan Li of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics delivered a speech, emphasizing the importance and urgency of developing geriatric medicine in the context of an aging society. He particularly stressed the crucial role of academic guidance and scientific research services in the development of geriatric medicine, especially in the field of research and clinical services for comorbidities in the elderly. It is proposed that the service level of the entire chain, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, should be comprehensively enhanced through multidisciplinary scientific research collaboration. Since its establishment, under the leadership of President Chen Limeng, the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics has always adhered to the correct direction of academic organization development, actively promoted the academic development and talent cultivation of geriatric nephrology, and made positive contributions to the development of geriatric nephrology medicine in China. It is hoped that the Nephrology Branch will continue to focus on geriatric kidney diseases, leverage its professional advantages, maintain innovative vitality, and call on the attending experts and scholars to jointly promote the high-quality development of the healthy aging cause, making more contributions to the advancement of geriatric nephrology medicine in China.
President Chen Limeng of the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics delivered a welcoming speech, saying, "The 78th World Health Assembly adopted an important resolution, officially listing kidney diseases as the fifth major non-communicable disease of global priority concern, marking a new stage in the global prevention and control of kidney diseases." Since its establishment, the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics has adhered to the leadership of the Party building, and carried out academic exchanges, continuing education, and grassroots assistance activities in a legal and compliant manner, making unremitting efforts to enhance the standardized diagnosis and treatment level and academic development of geriatric nephrology in China. This conference, with the theme of "Focusing on Elderly Kidney Health, Jointly Building the Future of Precision Prevention and Treatment", has invited nearly a hundred renowned experts and scholars in the fields of nephrology and geriatrics. It has specially set up a training course on the progress of diagnosis and treatment of elderly kidney diseases and added roundtable discussions to promote academic exchanges and promotion. Professor Chen Limeng called on colleagues across the country to work together and make unremitting efforts to comprehensively improve the diagnosis and treatment level of kidney diseases in the elderly in our country.
Vice President Peng Bin of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Professor CAI Guangyan, the chairperson of the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, and Professor Li Xuemei, the advisor of the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, also delivered speeches in turn at the opening ceremony, jointly expressing their deep expectations for this conference.
After the opening ceremony of the conference, there was a splendid academic report session. The academic reports focused on multiple topics such as the cornerstone and progress of treating geriatric kidney diseases, new technologies and the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, issues and practices related to metabolism-related kidney diseases in the elderly, comorbidities in elderly patients with chronic kidney diseases, and experiences and problems in geriatric immunotherapy, engaging in in-depth academic exchanges of ideas and experiences. Professor CAI Guangyan, Professor Ruan Xiongzhong, Professor Cheng Qingli and Professor Chen Limeng from the Lipid Research Center of Chongqing Medical University respectively delivered keynote speeches on the topics of "Advances in the Treatment of Geriatric Kidney Diseases", "Fatty Acid Translocase CD36 and Nocturnal Hypertension", "Principles of Diuretic Use in Geriatric Heart Syndrome" and "From 'Asian Redface Syndrome' to New Targets for the Treatment of Acute Kidney Injury". Professors Zha Yan, Chen Xiaonong, Li Wenge, Jia Qiang, MAO Yonghui, Yao Li, Zhao Weihong, Xu Hui, Zhao Jiahui, Li Yuehong and dozens of other renowned experts and scholars in the fields of geriatrics and nephrology in China, as well as young and middle-aged experts from the clinical front line, jointly participated in the conference, presenting an academic feast to the attendees. A high-level academic exchange platform has been established. The conference also specially set up a forum on the application of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, and carried out paper presentations and poster exchanges. At the same time, an expert discussion meeting on the compilation of a consensus on the treatment of kidney diseases in the elderly was held.
The conference was held concurrently with a full committee meeting, which comprehensively reviewed the achievements of the branch in the 2024-2025 period and introduced the preparatory work for this meeting. Subsequently, the vice presidents, standing committee members and committee members present engaged in in-depth and lively discussions, jointly exploring the development direction of the branch and suggestions for the next steps of work. Four newly added members have joined the family of the Nephrology branch. President Chen Limeng concluded by expressing her gratitude to everyone for their active suggestions and strategies, which have brought more vitality and creativity to the future work of the branch.
The successful holding of this conference not only enhanced the communication and cooperation among colleagues in geriatric nephrology, but also contributed to the homogenization improvement of the diagnosis and treatment level of geriatric kidney diseases in our country, promoting the integration and cooperation between geriatric medicine and nephrology in our country. Looking ahead, the Nephrology Branch of the Chinese Society of Geriatrics will continue to uphold the mission of "developing geriatric medicine and serving the health of the elderly", strengthen exchanges and cooperation with domestic and international peers, promote continuous innovation and development in the field of geriatric nephrology, and make greater contributions to healthy aging.
